MATHS IS FUN!

We love maths!

Today we have been learning about place value...

 and decimals!

GREATER THAN AND LESS THAN!

Today in Maths we learnt about greater than and less than.  We made a greedy crocodile mouth.  The mouth ALWAYS opens to the biggest number.  

Next we made two sets of different sizes.  We put the crocodile mouth facing the biggest set.  Then we read the mathematical sentence.

For example:  2 is less than 5 

5 is greater than 1

You could get us to practice this at home.

WHAT'S MISSING?

Today in Maths we made patterns.  Then our friend 'stole' one of our objects when we weren't looking.  We had to guess what was missing.

Here are some of the ways we figured it out:

• "I read the pattern to figure out what was missing" - Max U
• "Sephia read the pattern to see what was missing" - Leah
• "Molly thought, which one is missing?" - Stevie
• "I just looked at the pattern and then I figured it out" - Kalas
• "I repeated my pattern" - Nate
• "I memorised my pattern and so I could tell which one was missing" - Noah

PATTERN AND ALGEBRA!

Over the next two weeks we will be learning about Pattern and Algebra.  We have started with Pattern. 

Today we played Musical Patterns.  We had to make a pattern and then when the music stopped, we moved to a friend's pattern and continued that pattern.

We have been talking about the rule for our patterns.  For example if the pattern was:  Red, blue, blue, red, blue, blue,  the rule would be ABB.

To help at home you could get us to make patterns with beads, coloured socks, forks and spoons, our toys, and get us to tell you the pattern's rule.

HUMAN CLOCKS!

Today in Maths, we were learning about time.  We learnt that the long hand is the minute hand and it takes one hour to go around the clock.  The short hand is called the hour hand.  It takes one hour to go from one number the next.

We made ourselves into a human clock.  We used kids as the numbers and kids as the hands.  Can you see what time it is?

You can help us at home, by getting us to read the time off the TV or the microwave.  We would like to learn both digital and analogue time.

FAST AND SLOW!

In Maths today we talked about Fast and Slow tasks.  We found out that some things take ages to do and others hardly take any time at all!

We had a few challenges to do.  We had to decide if they were fast or slow challenges.  Here's a photo of Nicole being challenged to write her name.  We decided it would a fast challenge.  We were right!

MATHS CHAMPS!

Mrs Lunn is testing our Strategy Knowledge over the next couple of days.  She was SUPER impressed to find that SIX people that she tested had leveled up! 

Congratulations to Lucas, Zak, Stevie, Leah, Naomi and Paige.

PARTS OF THE DAY!

Today we classified events that happen during the day.  The day is divided into the morning, afternoon, evening and night.  We noticed that we are super busy in the morning and really only brush our teeth and sleep at night!

TIME AND TEMPERATURE!

Over the next two weeks half of our Maths Sessions will focus on the Measurement Stand of the Maths Curriculum.  We will be looking at Time and Temperature.  We will be learning the days of the week, months of the year, and seasons.  We will learn how to tell the time using analogue clocks initially and depending on how flash we are, we might even learn to tell digital time.

You can help us at home by making us aware of what time it is, what time we need to leave to come to school, when is tea time etc.  You might like to tell us how long we have to get ready, or eat our tea.  Putting the timer on the microwave to countdown while we do something helps us realise how long ten minutes is for example.

In the other half of our lessons, we will continue to do our Strategy and Knowledge workshops with the teachers.  In Strategy we are still focusing on Multiplication and Division and for Knowledge this week we are looking at Grouping and Place Value (ie How many tens are there in 30)

OUTSTANDING MATHS SUPERSTARS!

We have been busy learning all about multiplication and division over the last week.  We are thrilled to announce Kalas has leveled up a Maths Strategy Stage in Mult/Div and Macy was awarded a certificate from Miss Crowther for always challenging herself.  She loves doing tricky maths equations!  Great job kids, we are super proud of you both.

SUBTRACTION!

Over the next few weeks, we will be learning all about Subtraction.  If you would like to help at home, please give us a number and ask us to count backwards from that number.

We are also learning to count backwards in 10s and 5s from 100, and in 2s from 20 (then bigger numbers).  

Please listen carefully to us when we count backwards in 10s as a lot of us say...

"... 40. 30, 12, 11, 10..."

Please get us to make sure we say thirTY and hopefully we will remember to say 20 and 10 after that;-)

LEVELED UP!

CONGRATULATIONS to Jayden, Sukhdeep, TK, Ethan, Alex and Micah on all moving up a strategy stage in Maths!   

FORWARD SEQUENCES WORKSHOPS!

In Maths for the next two weeks we are focusing on Forward Sequences.  Please help us at home by giving us a number and asking us what number comes next.  We are pretty flash so give us hard ones!

HAPPY 100 DAYS!

Yesterday marked our 100th Day of School!  We are 100 days smarter!  Our teachers made a whole lot of activities that revolve around the number 100.  We had a fantastic day.
