GREAT EXCITEMENT!

Hmm... we wonder which fairy tale character is coming tomorrow.

Don't forget our Celebration of Learning in the Hall at 9.30am!

We can't wait to see you.

THE CHEEKY BABY!

Hor-shh, hor-shh.
"Guess what, my big girl!  I have a surprise"
"What! A surprise?"
"Yes a surprise."
"What is it?"
"It is a baby"
"What!  A baby?"
"Yes, a baby!"

Two years later...
"You are getting so, so, so, so cheeky." shouted Mum to the baby.

The next day when the sun was rising up, the little girl... shuffled along the kitchen floor and Bella, with chubby cheeks, climbed high up to the three shelves to get the nutella.  She unscrewed the nutella lid and got a handful and chucked it up in the air and it rained nutella!

THE TROLLS!

"Gather up trolls.  I want to talk to you.  When the girl is asleep we will put the rope on the girl and then we can get back into your big box."

By Molly

THE SNAIL MAILMAN!

Snail Mail
The snail Mailman is going to have a party at his house.  He is delivering some mail to his friends because he wants his friends to come over to his house.  I was deciding that it was my birthday.

"Welcome to my party.  I'm so pleased that you came to my house.  Come in guys for my party."

By Ethan

THE LITTLE CHEEKY BABY!

Today's Writing Prompt
"Ha, ha, ha!" the little, cheeky, sneaky, baby duct-taped her Mum to a chair.   Then she climbed cautiously like a monkey, up the huge white fridge and she snatched the Nutella!

She opened the jar and put her hand in and shoved her face in.  Gobble, gobble, gobble.  She got very messy but the duct-tape on her Mum ripped.

"You are a naughty cheeky baby!  Go and clean yourself up!"  the Mum said.  She ran a bath and cleaned the baby up.  "You look shiny clean." the Mum said.

OUR BUILDING BRIDGES VIDEO!

Here is a photo-story we made of our learning process of making a bridge for the Three Billy Goats Gruff.  We hope you enjoy it.

A NEW HOUSE FOR THE THREE LITTLE PIGS!

Today we finished a Lego house for the Three Little Pigs.   We learnt how to make a Lego roof today.   It was pretty tricky and involved a lot of patience and persistence!

TESTING OUR BRIDGES!

We tested by putting plastic animals on the bridge.   Our bridge are so strong that they will be able to easily hold the Three Billy Goats Gruff.

FAIRY TALE PROGRESS UPDATE!

Here's a quick update on the latest goings on in our quest to solve all the fairy tale characters problems...
We have found out about all sorts of cool things like there are different types of bridges like beam, arch, truss and suspension bridges.   We have learnt about what houses are made off too. Each group has taken time to stop and REFLECT on what they are trying to achieve and are now at the ACT stage.
We are now all busy designing our bridge or house and we'll start making them hopefully tomorrow.   We are having so much fun and are learning lots along the way too! So is Mrs Lunn!
If you have any boxes or gladwrap rolls you don't need at home,  please send them along to school. We'd love to re use them!

PLACE VALUE CARD SWAP!

Here is a great photo of Cameron concentrating hard at maths.  He was playing a new game Mrs Lunn made for his maths group.  They were each given three playing cards (not the 10s or the picture cards) and they had to arrange the cards to make the biggest number possible.   The group was learning all about place value.

After a few goes at this,  Cameron was so flash that Mrs Lunn gave him four cards! Now he was making numbers in the thousands!  Well done Cameron.  You certainly were an amazing mathematician today!

ROBIN'S NEST!

Today the Squares maths group played a game where they had to match up the basic facts on eggs with the number on the nest.  The kids had a great time swapping eggs between them to make sure the eggs were in the correct nest.

GENIUS HOUR EDITION TWO!

We had about 20 kids choose to take part in Genius Hour this week.   We had kids learning about cheetahs,  dogs,  artic foxes as well as kids designing and building race tracks with portals (as every good race track should have) and cars that transform into helicopters.  Jermaine is a genius at riding his skateboard so he designed and made a skateboard and some ramps from Mobilo.  He gave us a demonstration of how the skateboard could do flips off the ramps. Very cool, Jermaine!

ETHAN'S GENIUS

In Genius Hour this week,  Ethan decided he would write a letter to his Dad.  Here are a few pictures of Ethan showing his letter and reading it to his friends.
We decided that writing the letter was only half the fun.   The best part was getting it in the mail,  so we went over to the office and asked Mrs Johnston if we could send the letter.   She kindly said yes and gave Ethan an envelope and some stamps.
So... Ethan's Dad,  keep an eye in your mailbox,  there's something coming for you!

MATHS IS FUN!

Here are a couple of photos Mrs Lunn took of us at Maths.  The first is the Triangles group playing a new place value game using Monopoly money.   The second photo is of the Squares group racing to see which pair can complete their hundreds puzzle the fastest. Great learning... great fun!

WE SAVED JACK!

Here is our photostory about how we saved Jack.  We used the Riverdale School Inquiry Model called Te Ako Retinga to help us find a solution for Jack's problem.  Our teachers think we did a pretty awesome job.  If you like our video, please leave a comment in the section below.  We love feedback!

TESTING JACK'S PARACHUTE!

Today we finished making the parachute for Jack.  We tested them by dropping the parachutes off the top of the bars. We found out that the bigger parachutes were better. They floated slowly down to the ground and kept our Lego man Jack safe.

ADDITION JENGA!

Today the Triangles maths group were playing Addition Jenga. It's a great way to practice your basic facts.   On the trickier equations the kids had to apply some of the strategies they have been learning about to solve the equation.   We learnt about near doubles today.   Feel free to ask the Triangles all about them.

SHARING OUR GENIUS!

Here's a few photos of us sharing what we did in Genius Hour with our friends.  We are really proud of what we have done.

OUR FIRST EVER GENIUS HOUR!

Today we started Genius Hour.  This is a workshop that we could choose to do.  Basically we get to do what we are passionate about.   Aeva loves insects so she found out all about them.   Sam loves building with mobilo.  He designed and made a special gun with a trigger that actually moves.  Alex and Sukhdeep worked together to build a race track complete with a round about.   Matty is passionate about learning so he spend his time writing an amazing story.   Some kids love art so they made some fantastic pieces of art that we will display in our classroom.   What a fabulous first session of Genius Hour!

THIS IS YOUR LIFE ... LC 15 & 16!

Today LC 15 and 16 hosted Assembly.  We showed the rest of the school and our parents what life is like in our classrooms.  Our teachers were so impressed with how well we sat and how well we spoke and danced.  We think we are pretty cool!

SUPER LEADERS!

We have appointed Stem Captains for our inquiry into how to help Jack get down the beanstalk quickly.  The Stem Captain has lots of responsibilities.   They are in charge of making sure the organisers are filled in, making sure that everyone has a say and most importantly,  making sure the group follows the inquiry process correctly.   Here is a photo of two of our Stem Captains,  Phoebe and Macy... and a photo of Captain Macy in action!

SAVING JACK!

We recieved a letter from Jack who is the main character in Jack and the Beanstalk.   He needs our help! He loves climbing the beanstalk because it is great exercise but unfortunately the Giant often tries to catch him.   It takes too long for Jack to climb down the beanstalk.  He's asked us to find a fast and safe way for him to get down.   Here are a few photos of us busy trying to solve Jack's problem.   Feel free to ask us what we've been up to.  We'd love to tell you all about it!

GREAT EXCITEMENT!

If you can imagine the noise 22 excited five and six year olds would make, then double it... you'll probably be close to the noise level in LC 15 this afternoon!

We received a letter from some Fairy Tale Characters!   They need our help to solve some of the problems they face in their stories.  We were dancing around and squealing with delight when we heard that one of the characters is going to come to school to see us and hear all our wonderful suggestions!   To say we are excited is definitely an understatment!

We are so looking forward to next week.

NGA MATAPONO!

Over the last few weeks, you would have seen a few posts about our learning surrounding Nga Matapono.  These are our Riverdale School beliefs.  To be a successful inquiring learner, we believe we must be Creative, Competent, Effective Communicators, and Self Managers.  Here is a video celebrating all that we have learnt over the last few weeks.  Enjoy!

OUR TREATY OF WAITANGI VIDEO!

We are famous!  We have made our very own video explaining the history of the Treaty of Waitangi and Mrs Lunn uploaded it to You Tube so it can be seen by the whole entire world!  We are so clever!

Check out or video and let us know what you think!

PLATINUM PRESS PASS!

These kids are Platinum Press Pass holders. Here is a photo of them filling in their timetables for the day.   What clever kids!

WOW WRITER OF THE DAY!

Check out that happy smile!
Julia wrote an AMAZING story and was our Writer of the Day.  She got her book displayed in the window and Mrs Lunn photocopied it and popped a copy in the Wow Writing Folder for Julia to take home to  share with her family.   Good work Julia!

EXCELLENT SELF MANAGERS!

Here are a couple of photos of us demonstrating what it means to be a good self manager.   We follow the instructions on the task card, we get out our looking cards for writing and we put our games away. When we demonstrate our excellent self management skills,  we move up an Independence Level.   We are loving having our Press Passes to wear!
