MRS PECK'S PROBLEM!

Guess what!

Mrs Peck needs our help!

She wrote to us today asking us if we could help her by planting some flowers in a couple of planter pots that she found in the storage shed down by the pool.  She'd like us to plant them so the pots can be on display at the Science Expo next week!

Of course we said we would help - we are the best helpers EVER!

Mrs Peck has set us some criteria that we have to follow:
  • The flowers must be in bloom for the Expo
  • The plants can be no taller than 30cm high
  • The flowers must be bright and attractive

We decided, like with any problem we have to solve, we'd better use Te Ako Ritenga (our Inquiry Process).

So today we started with WONDER...

Here are a few photos of us working in our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) groups.

We were busy brainstorming all the things we would need to know and do to help Mrs Peck.

Tomorrow we think we need to go down to the pool to find the pots so we can see EXACTLY what we are dealing with!

We will keep you informed of our progress...

MATHS WORKSHOPS!

Over the last couple weeks, Mrs Lunn has been teaching us Multiplication.  We have been learning how to write multiplication equations but more importantly... what they actually mean!

Here are a few photos to show you what we have been up to in Maths:

Here's Cate, George and Isabel working out how may bears there are!

Bailey and Darian sharing their 'Array-nbows' worksheet

Cam, Max and Matty deep in thought using arrays to show multiplication

There are lots of ways to help us at home:

  • We could practice skip counting in 2s (ie 2,4,6,8,10 etc)
  • Then we could try skip counting in 5s and 10s
  • And if we get super clever, we can try skip counting in 3s, 4s (That's learning our times tables without even knowing it!)
You could always ask us questions while doing chores around the house like
  • Counting the socks in their pairs to see how many there are all together
  • Skip counting the number of forks and knives at the table etc
And when we get REALLY good, you could ask us some multiplication basic facts like 2x5 (the x means lots of/groups)
The faster we know these basic facts, the better mathematicians we will be for the rest of our lives! Yay!

GENIUS HOUR!

Oliva and Timothy the Bear drew a picture using pastels.  She drew a butterfly first and then she looked for a green pastel and added lots of extra details.
Today in Genius Hour we practised being CREATIVE!
We built amazing towers, jet skis and houses and race tracks.  We drew colourful pictures.  We made cool things with mobilo.
When we were being Creative we had to think about what were going to do.  We had to ask ourselves how we were going to make it better - we had to REFLECT!

When were talking to our friends about what they were doing we had to ask...

"Can you tell me about what you are making."

This is an open-ended question.  Asking open-ended questions gets us a lot more detail!

After reflection and improvements

Aaliyah and Stevie made a bedroom for Dawson and he even gets a slide!

Jermaine made a ramp for a car all by himself

Naomi made a city complete with a cylinder on top of the tallest tower

LC 15 & 16 FABULOUS ASSEMBLY!

Today LC 15 & 16 presented Assembly.  We had a couple of technical hiccups due to flat batteries in the microphone (whoops) but we coped very well and our teachers were super proud of us!

Here are a few photos of us during assembly.  Don't we look cute!

Here is Noah being the rain in our Flowers, Stem, Leaves and Roots song!

This is a photo of us and our proud teachers!

WORKSHOPS!

Over the last few weeks, we have been super busy in our various workshops.  Here are a few pictures of us in our Writing workshops.  We have been learning about Structure - These groups have been using time connectives such as next, then, after to join their ideas together.  Mrs Lunn made us an activity so we can practise using these words.

Here is a photo of Tyler, Paige and Phoebe at the Author Circle.  They are wearing their 'Writers' eyes' and are looking through their stories to make corrections, improvements and to check where is fits on our 'Good Story Judging Rubric'.
